The Gift Hidden in Life’s Changes
Transitions can be powerful vehicles for growth
The Gift in Transitions
The quiet power of stepping beyond your comfort zone
Hi Reader,
Lately, I’ve been thinking about the transitions of life after moving my chiropractic studio. Transitions can be quite powerful times in our lives despite the chaos and uncertainty that they bring up.
Our survival instincts are wired to seek comfort and avoid danger. That’s useful when there’s real danger, but in everyday life, it can keep us stuck. Over time, we build a subconscious zone of comfort. This comfort zone feels familiar and safe, and we tend to resist anything that pushes us beyond it.
Our subconscious comfort zone incorporates every area of our lives, including our homes, careers, relationships, routines, and even our health. We may want to grow, to feel better, to change, but we’re habituated to the familiar, even when it’s not serving us.
Life, however, has a way of moving us forward and disrupting our comfort zone. There are many transitions within the cycles of life, such as graduations, moves, career changes, changing relationships, and natural cycles such as the changing of seasons or day to night. These moments interrupt the familiar and push us - willingly or not - out of our comfort zone.
And that’s a gift.
Transitions can be uncomfortable, but they are also powerful catalysts for growth. They shake loose the habits, patterns, and identities that we’ve outgrown. They invite us to step into something new, and we can often make different choices that are more aligned with who we want to become.
Transitions are chaotic and disruptive, but the beauty is that after the dust settles, we can step into a new way of experiencing life. And our choices impact this profoundly.
When we meet these transitions with awareness instead of resistance, they stop feeling like disruptions and start feeling like opportunities.
Maybe the next change in your life isn’t something to endure, it’s something to grow through.
Transitions provide opportunities for shedding the old and inviting the new. But if we want to emerge stronger and healthier, we can pick a few simple habits to be consistent with through the change. In order to create better health, it is no surprise that I would recommend sticking with an exercise routine throughout the transitions of life.
How will you use the next transition/opportunity in your life? And on a deeper level, if you are bored or stuck, what is a way you can create a transition in your life? Or how can you choose to move outside your comfort zone?
Be well,
Dr. Josh
