Is Beauty Just Skin Deep?

Why health is the root of true beauty - and how to create both

The Beauty Signal

Hi Reader,

We all know beauty when we see it.

It’s not always about symmetry or perfection. Sometimes, it’s a quiet radiant glow, or a sense of vitality and energy that you can just feel.

And even though beauty can feel subjective, we tend to agree on who has it. Why?

Because on some level, we’re wired to recognize it.
Not just for aesthetics, but for survival.

Beauty is an ancient health signal.

From an evolutionary perspective, beauty is less about glamour and more about biology.
Clear skin, bright eyes, strong hair and nails, a calm nervous system, fluid movement, upright and relaxed posture are are all signs of a well-functioning and well-regulated system.

We’re drawn to those signs because they indicate health.
And health indicates resilience, strength, fertility, safety, and longevity.

You don’t have to believe in evolution to feel this truth:
Beauty isn’t just skin deep, it radiates on every level from a core of good health.

But beauty isn’t just about features or filters.
Many of us have also had the experience of seeing someone who looks conventionally attractive, but something just feels off.

That’s because true beauty isn’t only visual, it’s energetic. It’s the coherence between how someone appears and how they are. We’re not just seeing with our eyes, we are sensing with our whole nervous system.

Your body broadcasts your health.

The way you move, hold yourself, and even how you breathe…
Your posture, muscle tone, facial expression, skin quality, voice, and energy…
These are some of the cues your body sends out constantly.

We are consciously aware of some of these factors, but there are so many more that are below the surface of our understanding. Bad breath smells unpleasant, but can also indicate an unbalanced gut. We pick up on different cues using all of our senses.

In my work as a chiropractor, I’ve seen that as people become healthier and feel better, their appearance also transforms. This happens as people reconnect to their bodies and let go of tension they didn’t even know they were carrying.

There’s a spark that returns to the eyes, a relaxation of the face and posture, a calmer and more regulated nervous system and demeanor. Some people experience other changes as well.

It’s not the intention of the work, but can be a natural byproduct of healing.

Chronic stress dims your glow.

Here’s what most people don’t realize:

Stress, trauma, and chronic tension don’t just live in your thoughts.
They live in your nervous system, and your nervous system lives in your body.

When we’re stuck in fight-or-flight or a state of constantly being alert, it can show up as:

  • Tension in the face and jaw and raised shoulders

  • Dull skin, low energy, and a flat or weak voice

  • Poor posture and tense movement patterns

These are not flaws, but rather they are signals.
They show us that the body needs healing and regulation.

You don’t need to chase beauty.

You can cultivate it by creating health.

When your body feels safe, it opens.
When your breath deepens, your face softens.
When your posture improves, your energy expands.

You become magnetic, not because you’re trying to be, but because you’re aligned, balanced, and present.

That’s why I care so deeply about nervous system health and regulation. Not just for pain relief, but for wholeness and for returning to a version of you that isn’t worn down by stress.

A simple practice to reconnect:

Next time you catch yourself in a moment of tension, try this:

1. Pause and feel your body.
Where are you holding tension?

2. Take three slow breaths through your nose.
Let your belly and ribs expand fully and exhale gently through the mouth.

3. Let something go with the exhale.
A shoulder, your jaw, or a thought.

These small shifts, done consistently, help to restore your natural glow. It’s about recognizing your cycles and interrupting them as tension arises. Healing isn’t rarely dramatic, it is often quiet. And the small things add up over time.

Thanks for reading and hope this serves as a reminder that good health is the center of a life without limitations.

Breathe well,
Dr. Josh
