Nothing Is Wrong, But Not Everything Is Right
Hi {{first_name | Reader}},
The absence of debilitating or life-threatening symptoms is not the same thing as being healthy.
At some point, society accepted a narrow and bleak definition of health. The common belief is that if nothing is obviously wrong, disruptive, or painful, you must be fine. We have been trained to settle for “fine,” but we can do so much better than that.
“Nothing is wrong” is very different than everything is right and working well.
The conventional view of health is reductionist in the sense that it is defined by what is absent. By this definition, if there is no pain, no obvious dysfunction, or nothing that can be diagnosed, you are healthy. And while that sounds reasonable, it does nothing to inspire you toward what’s possible. It also leaves a lot of people feeling unseen because they don’t feel well, but no one can tell them what’s going on or find something wrong.
Health deserves a more expansive definition, because when it’s truly present, it touches every aspect of your life.
And if you’re not actively expressing health, there are often subtle signs that suggest something is brewing beneath the surface. Many people are told they are healthy and that nothing is wrong, but that doesn’t explain why they feel exhausted, tense, emotionally numb, irritable, or stay awake at night plagued by racing thoughts. They are not healthy, they are just dealing with quieter, more subtle forms of dysfunction that are not recognized as a lack of health.
Rather than make people afraid of what they cannot see, I hope readers will use this information to recognize the subtle signs and improve their habits before things escalate. Ignoring things for too long is asking for trouble, because eventually they get louder and more obvious.
I am not looking to make anyone feel paranoid about every little thing that feels off. Rather, I want to invite you to become more observant and aware, so you can read the signs and use them to make your life better. You can make small shifts now under your own power, or wait until change is the only option left.
The goal here is not just to define what to avoid, but also to show you what is possible when you’re truly healthy.
What healthy actually feels like
You feel at home in your body.
You can move, bend, walk, exercise, and stretch with ease.
Your energy feels steady and electric and you have a subtle glow.
You are not limited from doing what you want to do.
Your baseline mood is quiet contentment.
You meet people with openness, instead of irritability.
And when you arrive here - especially after not feeling this way for a long time - people notice. They’ll say you look different, lighter, happier, more vibrant, or even younger. And even better, you feel peaceful and are free of health related anxieties and distractions.
True health is the full expression of life through your mind, body, and spirit. It feels incredible and brings out the best version of you. It has an intangible quality to it where everything just feels right, in body, mind, and spirit.
But many people settle for far less. This isn’t a conscious choice, but is usually because they don’t know what’s possible, don’t believe it’s possible for them, or don’t know how to get there. Our limited definition of health plays a big role in that.
An expansive view of health should be the new standard. Most people are capable of accessing a consistent, resilient state where they feel aligned, adaptable, and alive.
In my chiropractic practice, I work with clients to help them get out of pain and dysfunction and into this concept of health. After that, we often continue working together to support wellness, but at a lower frequency.
When someone is ready for wellness care, I expect they will feel great for the majority of the time between visits, typically for a few weeks at a time. Of course, no one feels perfect all the time, and it’s normal to have a few off days here and there. But those moments shouldn’t derail your life, and they shouldn’t last long.
True health isn’t only that your body is working as it is designed to, it’s a holistic picture of how you experience your life. That is a product of your ability to regulate, adapt, connect, and express yourself fully - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Health is not the absence of problems, it is the presence of life. I think its time to stop defining it by what’s missing and start using it as a measure of how fully you’re living.
